Job Title: Technical Litigation Officer

Department / Location: Technical Litigation Team - Leeds / Homeworking

Reports to: Head of Technical Litigation

Hours of Work: 35 hours a week (between the hours of 09.00-17.00) – 1 hour for lunch (some flexibility may be required according to workloads).

Salary: £25,000 to £32,000 (depending on experience)

JOB PURPOSE

To run a varied caseload of predominantly non-standard secured litigation claims, including deceased matters under limited supervision. The candidate will also undertake non-standard unsecured litigation cases. To work as part of the Technical Team and assist other team members in all aspects of their caseloads. Also, to maximise net returns for our varied client base through effective management of a high volume caseload, understand the debtors’/ deceased estate circumstances and ensure that actions achieve the best outcome for the debtor/ deceased estate and our client and to advise clients as to which litigation options will maximise their chances of achieving their intended outcome.

PRINCIPAL TASKS

To run their own cases and to assist other fee earners within the Technical Team with their caseload, undertaking tasks such as:

  • Dealing with a caseload of defended and non-standard litigation cases.
  • Liaising with clients in writing, by telephone and in person when required.
  • Providing legal advice to clients on matters relevant to disputed/defended cases, including evidential requirements, prospects of success, procedural requirements etc.
  • Understanding the client’s objectives and ensuring they are met by providing sound and concise advice on strategy and procedure.
  • Negotiating with debtors, next of kin, solicitors and other third parties to maximise the net recovery level achieved for the client.
  • Drafting legal documents, including particulars of claim, witness statements, application notices, consent orders, defences, and skeleton arguments.
  • Managing a case load under minimal supervision.
  • Dealing with correspondence in an effective and professional manner.
  • Dealing with cases in the absence of other fee earners.
  • Undertaking legal research.
  • Maintaining a high and consistent fee income through time recording and fixed fee tasks.
  • Instructing Counsel and local court advocates.
  • Attendance at court and client meetings.
  • Ensuring all internal and external SLA’s set in relation to your caseload are achieved.

TECHNICAL SKILLS / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Have previous experience of dealing with disputed litigation, preferably in respect of disputed debt recovery including agreements regulated by the Consumer Credit Act 1974 and mortgages;
  • Ideally, be legally qualified, although applications are also welcome from those who are qualified for the role by experience
  • Have experience of providing legal advice to clients;
  • Whilst not essential, the ideal application will have solid experience of dealing with disputed mortgage possession proceedings;
  • Have a good understanding of the legal environment;
  • Have excellent IT skills.
