Our Engineering function enables the delivery of our equipment and support by providing specialist expertise in domain-related disciplines such as: mechanical, electrical & power distribution; software, sensors & electronic systems; acquisition safety & environmental protection; quality assurance; ordnance munitions & explosives, as well as systems engineering & integration.

The Internal Technical Support (ITS) team is Defence Equipment & Supports in-house technical consultancy team. Within ITS, the Independent Safety and Environment Assurance (ISEA) team promotes skills development, standardises approaches and increases knowledge transfer across DE&S by holding delivery teams to account against internal and regulatory requirements. Established to reduce our reliance on Private Sector Support (PSS) expenditure across the whole of DE&S. The ITS-ISEA team is a significant and growing area of consultancy and provides the business with a Safety Auditor and Advice service.

Safety Auditors can choose their permanent duty station (PDS) from the list below:

Kentigern House, 65 Brown Street, Glasgow, G2 8EX.
RNAS Yeovilton, Ilchester, Somerset, BA22 8HT.
MOD Manchester, Piccadilly Gate, Store Street, Manchester, M1 2WD.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of these posts will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Scoping fixed price technical consultancy tasks to meet customers’ needs and be deliverable to cost, time and quality.
  • Managing the delivery of fixed price technical consultancy tasks to customer satisfaction, cost and quality.
  • Working on complex products, systems and services for example in defence, aerospace, maritime, weapons, automotive, rail or another high technology sectors.
  • Helping clients solve complex safety challenges and problems.
  • Provide an independent audit capability against a catalogue of services to provide best practice and best value to the customer.
  • As a Safety Auditor you will provide consultancy audit and advice services to DE&S Delivery Teams to assure the delivery of safe and suitable equipment to the Front Line Commands.
  • To carry out these responsibilities and advice services it is required that you have consultancy experience at practitioner level in a relevant engineering and safety discipline and in at least one of the equipment domains for which DE&S operates.
  • You will have involvement in contracting for and delivering against all aspects of System Safety including, but not restricted to: hazard analysis; risk assessment; assessing the safety implications of design changes; and producing or assessing key project safety documentation. These activities will be performed in the context of UK, MOD, and DE&S policy and guidance.
  • Takes responsibility for understanding client requirements, collecting data, delivering analysis and problem resolution.
  • Identifies, evaluates and recommends options.
  • Collaborates with, and facilitates stakeholder groups, as part of formal or informal consultancy agreements. Seeks to fully address client needs and implements solutions if required.
  • Enhances the capabilities and effectiveness of clients, by ensuring that proposed solutions are fully understood and appropriately exploited.

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you'll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • A depth and breadth of technical experience in own specialism with knowledge and application of Systems Engineering approaches.
  • Consultancy experience from within a heavily regulated industry (e.g. defence, nuclear, aerospace, oil and gas, rail). Able to demonstrate to SFIA Consultancy Level 5
  • A level 4 qualification (HNC or above) in a relevant Engineering or Science discipline or demonstrable equivalent experience.
  • An understanding of Safety Tools and Techniques that demonstrates a previous track record of experience.

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competences and behaviours will be assessed at interview:

  • SFIA Framework - Consultancy - Level 5
  • Managing a Quality Service
  • Communicating and Influencing
