Job Description

This role is an exciting opportunity to work as part of the Newcastle GP Services (NGPS) Flexible Workforce Hub (Flexipool) team. Flexipool is a new and expanding active bank of clinical and non-clinical staff, covering multiple roles within General Practice. The aim of Flexipool is to provide flexible working into Primary Care, to cover planned leave, existing vacancies and short-notice unplanned absence across General Practice in Newcastle.

We are looking for an experienced Nurse with a background in General Practice, who is passionate about Primary Care and training and development. This role will involve direct supervision, competency assessment and training of newly recruited staff, through the delivery of clinics in a General Practice setting. This is an excellent opportunity for the post-holder to have oversight and influence on the training and development pathway for the Flexipool, alongside working clinically in practice.

This role is fully flexible; hours, pay and contracting are negotiable depending on your experience and availability. The job location will be varied across practices and services in Newcastle, and you may be required to travel between sites.

Nurse Supervisor Job Description and Responsibilities:

  • Diagnosing and treating patients with minor illnesses, ailments and injuries – history taking, physical examination, problem-solving and clinical decision-making, to establish a diagnosis and management plan
  • Prioritise and triage the needs of patients accordingly, making any necessary referrals for investigations
  • Clinical care, including: observations, assessment and reviews (CHD, LD, COPD, asthma, hypertension, diabetes), cervical screening, immunisations, injections, bloods, foot checks, ECG, NHS Health checks, peak flow, pill check, stitches and clips removal, urinalysis and wound care
  • Clinical supervision and training of staff and students
  • Competency assessment and sign off for staff and students
  • Oversight and development of the training and development pathway at an individual and city-wide level
  • Health promotion – alcohol screening, smoking cessation, healthy diet, physical activity, weight management, sexual health and family planning
  • Long term conditions – screening, diagnosis, ongoing management, and referral to other agencies in line with NICE guidance and Quality and Outcome Framework indicators
  • Quality assurance and service support
  • Continuous service improvement, including support with generating protocols and standard operating procedures
  • Promote evidence-based practice through the use of the latest research-based guidelines and the development of practice-based research
  • Recognise opportunities to reduce inequalities and unwarranted variation
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information
  • Ensuring the privacy, dignity and safety of individuals is maintained at all times
  • Use of clinical IT systems, and maintaining accurate patient records
  • Recognise and report issues relating to safeguarding vulnerable children and adults

Qualifications & Registration

  • Qualified Nurse, registered with the NMC (essential)
  • Evidence of continuous professional development (essential)
  • Non-Medical Prescribing qualification (desirable)

Skills and Experience

  • Experience as a Nurse in General Practice
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Organisation and time management skills
  • Management of long term conditions e.g. asthma, COPD, diabetes, CHD
  • Advanced autonomous clinical skills, and a broad and in-depth theoretical knowledge base
  • Clinical supervision skills
  • Experience with using EMIS and SystmOne clinical systems
