The City Intelligence Unit is a multidisciplinary team responsible for providing the Mayor and the GLA with world-class evidence and analysis. Our work covers a wide range of topics including demography, economics, social policy, crime, opinion research, and spatial analysis. We also employ a growing number of data professionals, including data scientists, data engineers, and data visualisation specialists.

In this post, you’ll help the Strategic Crime Analysis team deliver on several high-profile data sharing projects. These projects concentrate on community safety issues and were introduced to help reduce crime and disorder within London.

A core responsibility of the role is maintaining and improving the SafeStats data service, from a backend data processing perspective right through to the administrative functions. This post is also integral to the running of the Information Sharing to Tackle Violence (ISTV) programme. With the post holder being responsible for the collection, cleansing, and processing of the data, alongside the production of automated reporting outputs.

The work undertaken in this role will contribute to making London a safer place to live, work and visit, through supporting the Mayor’s priorities around crime, public safety, and public health.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Responsible for the day-to-day running of the existing SafeStats data service, including collecting, processing, and publishing datasets onto the SafeStats website, identifying and resolving data quality issues, and acting as the first point of contact for user enquiries.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with data suppliers, stakeholders, and customers to ensure that SafeStats continues to share data in an effective and legislatively compliant way.
  • Work with the Head of Strategic Crime Analysis to provide ongoing improvements to the SafeStats data platform, including the integration of new and improved datasets, refinements to the data processing code, system testing, and enhancements to the data quality assurance checks.
  • Query the SafeStats database to generate bespoke outputs that meet the needs of the Strategic Crime Analysis Team.
  • Automate programmatically the key analytical outputs produced by the Strategic Crime Analysis Team to increase reproducibility and efficiency.
  • Involvement in SafeStats user training and platform demonstration sessions, as requested by the Head of Strategic Crime Analysis.
  • Contribute to the wider work and outputs of the City Intelligence Unit, as required.
  • Organise the bi-annual SafeStats steering group meetings.
  • Manage resources allocated to the job in accordance with the Authority’s policies and Code of Ethic and Standards.
  • Realise the benefits of London’s diversity by promoting and enabling equality of opportunities and promoting the diverse needs and aspirations of London’s communities.
  • Realise the benefits of a flexible approach to work in undertaking the duties and responsibilities of this job, and participating in multi-disciplinary, cross-department and cross-organisational groups and project teams.
