Academic Development Programme - new Assistant Professors will undertake a 5-year development programme, at the end of which they are expected to be promoted to Associate Professor. The programme consists of a variety of development opportunities and the time to reflect and develop.

We are seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy who will make a significant contribution to education and administration. The post holder will be expected to significantly contribute to the development and delivery of our musculoskeletal physiotherapy education. Alongside this they will be an excellent academic citizen, likely to be demonstrated through generous, mutually respectful, and supportive working relationships with all staff and students.

Role Summary

You will have an extensive background in musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice with applied clinical skills demonstrated across one or more of healthcare, community and sport and exercise settings. This will be complimented through membership or eligibility for membership to the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapy.

You will be an inspiring educator, able to clearly communicate to students of all levels and the public. You will contribute to programme delivery, leadership, and enhancement in physiotherapy, ensuring an excellent educational experience for your students.

You will play an integral role in identification and enhancement of student healthcare placement education, advance teaching and learning practice within your modules, take a key role in curriculum development, and provide student academic and pastoral support. You will deliver exceptional teaching that engages students and is informed by discipline-based research. Alongside this, you will demonstrate academic citizenship, developing, and maintaining mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students, and ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others carry out theirs.
In management and administration, you will undertake activities that develop and make a substantial contribution to key agendas. This includes but is not limited to stakeholder and public engagement, widening participation, schools outreach, or similar activities at School level.

Main Duties

Education
You will contribute across the range of teaching and learning activities:

  • Deliver specific professional programmes including support of healthcare placement education;
  • Demonstrate to and review students’ application of advanced clinical skills relevant to musculoskeletal physiotherapy clinical practice;
  • Teach and examine courses at a range of levels relevant to healthcare;
  • Maintain your registration as a physiotherapist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC);
  • Plan and review your own teaching approaches and encourage others to do the same;
  • Design contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging curriculum content including where appropriate, develop programme proposals and make substantial contributions to the design and renewal of teaching programmes more widely;
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to design and deliver teaching, learning and assessment;
  • Use digital resources/environments effectively to support learning and assessment;
  • Develop and manage approaches to teaching and learning that are considered best practice in the Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy;
  • Advise others on aspects of learning, teaching and assessment;
  • Advance the practice of teaching in their modules and within the school, and play an important role in student academic support;
  • Ensure your teaching practice is underpinned by evidence-based research;
  • Frequently update your subject expertise in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, and undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance your own teaching and learning processes;
  • You may play an important role in the recruitment and admission of students; and supervise/co-supervise MSc and/or doctoral students to completion;
  • Develop and make substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, stakeholder engagement, public engagement activities or similar on musculoskeletal physiotherapy that enhances the student experience or employability, and which benefits the College and University;
  • Devise and supervise projects, student dissertations, and practical work.

Management/Administration
To contribute to School administration. This may include:

  • Contribute to the allocation and administration of student healthcare clinical placements
  • Contributing to the administration/management of teaching across the School;
  • Where appropriate, leading and managing a team to devise and implement a new and/or revised process (e.g. new programme or a recruitment drive);
  • Advising on professional development of colleagues and students;
  • Making a contribution to administrative activities within the University (e.g. appeals panels, working groups);
  • Developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, stakeholder engagement, public engagement, widening participation, schools outreach;
  • Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and actively challenging unacceptable behaviour.
  • Contributing to the School’s principles of equality and inclusivity through positive change to improve diversity, to develop a sense of belonging and create a fair and equal opportunity for students and colleagues.

Person Specification

  • Normally, a higher Degree relevant to the physiotherapy discipline (completed/near completion of PhD/Professional Doctorate, or a Master’s degree and a proven track record of success and broad experience in higher education or health care leadership roles).
  • Qualified physiotherapist holding current HCPC registration.
  • Membership or eligibility for membership to the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (MACP).
  • Teaching experience and scholarship within musculoskeletal physiotherapy in the academic or practice setting.
  • Musculoskeletal Advanced Care Practitioner (ACP) healthcare experience.
  • A commitment to quality enhancement in physiotherapy practice.
  • Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning.
  • Skills in managing, motivating & mentoring others.

Teaching

  • Ability to design, deliver, assess, and revise teaching programmes.
  • Experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching and advising colleagues in a relevant healthcare setting.
  • Experience of post-graduate supervision at masters and/or doctoral level.
  • Appropriate level of experience in supporting placement education in health care settings.
  • Experience and achievement in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity that enhances the student experience or employability in a relevant healthcare setting.

Management Administration

  • Ability to contribute to School management processes.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
  • Experience of championing Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in own work area.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied.
  • Ability to identify issues with the potential to impact on protected groups and take appropriate action.
