This is an opportunity for an individual to join a small team in a busy screening laboratory. The Scottish Bowel Screening Programme invites all eligible individuals aged 50-74, from all over Scotland, on a 2-year cycle. The Laboratory is the only one of its kind in Scotland and receives approximate 700,000 samples per annum.


The role of the HCSW is to be responsible (under direct or indirect supervision) to set up and maintain the analytical equipment used in the processing of faecal samples. They will run control material, calibrate and run clinical samples on the analysers, they will be responsible for dealing with minor problems and know when to escalate to the Biomedical Scientist. They will also be required to assist with the collection, opening and booking in of the samples daily, and carry out other tasks as required within their scope of practice.

The post requires good numeracy, literacy and keyboard skills. Further essential skills are accuracy and attention to detail. Qualifications should include either: 3 Standard grades at Credit Level or 3 at National 5, which should include a science together with Maths, or SVQ3 in relevant science subject, or completion of modern apprenticeship in life sciences or completion of equivalent accredited education / learning. Knowledge and experience of laboratory work would be an advantage but full training will be provided.

The Department is approved by the Institute of Biomedical Science and NHS Education Scotland as a training laboratory. The department has UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189 standards.

You will be required to achieve the mandatory Induction standards for Healthcare Support Workers in Scotland and to comply with the Code of Conduct throughout your employment.
