Job overview

The post not only involves teaching opportunities but the chance to build your CV when applying for a training number or for any other future post. It offers the chance to undertake a higher degree, via the Masters in Medical Education programme, present at local, regional, national conferences and research innovative ideas in medical education. The Department fully supports all Clinical Teaching Fellows in developing the course and UMED also has its own annual Undergraduate Medical Education Conference, where best and innovative practice can be shared.


You will be based across QMC and City Campus and will have office space, desk and PC.


This post is a combination Half-Time Teaching (50%) with Half-Time Clinical/On-Call Duties (50%)

Main duties of the job

Teaching in Surgery (50%)

  • To deliver ward based general surgery teaching on the new Surgery curriculum, across both the City and QMC Campus.
  • To provide reasonable cover where appropriate for the other Clinical Teaching Fellows (and vice-versa.)
  • Contribute to the clinical assessment of students during the formal competency assessments
  • Contribute to Induction of surgery students.
  • To provide teaching on the Early Clinical Experience Course (14 x Year 1/2 hospital visits).
  • Contribute to the formal examination of these students including OSCE examinations and exam question writing. Take part in one-to-one tutoring of students re-sitting their exams and provide one-two-one teaching support for struggling students.
  • Contribute in a strategic sense to the evolution of teaching for all the above groups.
  • Support teaching across the clinical course as required.
  • Working with the Undergraduate Manager and other Teaching Fellows to develop innovative teaching methods across the clinical course.
  • Undertake appropriate projects to support your own learning and improve the experience of the Department.

For 50% of the week you will be joining the clinical rota and will be involved in working in a variety of clinical areas. You will also share a slot on the CT on-call rota, which will give you valuable clinical time and experience.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

These tasks will involve administration and coordination, as well as hands-on delivery of teaching.

  • • Full registration with the GMC • MBBS
    • Significant experience of working in NHS

Desirable criteria

    • MRCS (Gen.Surg) or equivalent
