The Opportunity

DC Thomson’s magazine brands are undergoing a period of transformation, adopting new ways of working across a new department-wide structure. As part of this transformation, DC Thomson is looking for a Features Journalist to work within our central Features & Specials team.

Reporting into a Features Editor, the Features Journalist will research and write news and feature articles and/or source content suited to the brand’s reader profile across a range of subjects ensuring all accuracy and quality standards are achieved.

What will you be doing as Features Journalist?

  • Creating content that is vibrant, imaginative and fit for purpose while conforming to the highest editorial standards and deadlines set.
  • Maintaining a constant stream of ideas, which are tailored to each title’s audience.
  • Actively developing and maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of the relevant subject(s) aligned to the reader needs and trends.
  • Producing outstanding content for our weekly/monthly print issues, website & social media, and brand extensions.
  • Working across several of our key pillars including fashion & beauty, health & fitness, travel, celebrity and general features.
  • Working collaboratively with design team members to provide image sourcing as applicable.
  • Liaising with central Design and Production Studio teams to ensure features are created to the highest standard.
  • Maintaining brand values and consistency of tone across all publications.
  • Contributing content to social media channels, maximising the use of Facebook, Twitter etc. to drive traffic to the sites and build engaged digital communities.
  • Working to only the highest editorial standards and being abreast of current trends.
  • Identifying opportunities and contributing ideas to grow the brands through new products and innovations.
  • Ensuring all content is suitably tagged and categorised to agreed standards to ensure content can be searched and archived for future use.
  • Undertaking journalistic training as and when required.

What we are looking for

  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills.
  • Experience in multi-tasking and turning copy around quickly and to a high standard.
  • Adaptable and flexible approach to work, to allow work over multiple titles for different audiences.
  • Collaborative team worker.
  • SEO and social media experience.
  • Resilient, self-motivated, resourceful.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • An ability to interpret instructions, prioritise tasks and work to strict deadlines and style guides.
  • In depth knowledge of competitors and market trends.
  • An understanding of media law and industry ethical guidelines.

This is a full-time, permanent position, working 35 hours per week. We offer a flexible-working hybrid environment with the opportunity to combine home working alongside office attendance. Please note, office attendance in Dundee/Glasgow will be required for this role, especially in the forming stage of new teams to allow for team building, training, workflows, brainstorming and workshops.
