Travis Perkins. You’re probably thinking bricks, blocks, timber and tools. I certainly did before I started working here, but there is so much more to this business than that. My name is Gemma, and I currently work as part of the recruitment team here at Travis Perkins, but I started off working in my local branch as a Counter Assistant enrolled on an apprenticeship. Let’s be honest, no one grows up with a burning passion to work in a builders merchant (well, I know I certainly didn't!). I didn't really know what to expect, but since joining, I have been supported by an amazing team that has an unrivaled passion to provide an excellent level of service to our local customers (typically builders and tradespeople) and I’m now working in a completely different area of the business in an area that I love.


Your primary role will be to work in our branch, serving customers over the counter, answering the phones, keeping the shop floor clean, tidy and safe, and build brilliant relationship with our customers, most of whom you’ll see regularly. As part of this apprenticeship, you will also support our sales team. I knew nothing (and I mean, nothing!) about building materials before starting here, but that really isn't an issue and as part of the apprenticeship programme all of this is covered. We have some real industry legends in our business too, so you’ll be in good hands!


As part of this 12 month apprenticeship programme, you will gain a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Customer Service which is the equivalent of 5 GCSE passes. All of your learning is “on the job”, Travis Perkins values a work-life balance and there is no need for you to complete any of your work “out of hours”. The course consists of a number of modules and you will have a dedicated coach that will guide you throughout, as well as being supported by your line manager (and in my case a really supportive team who I consider to be my friends!)
