Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) is looking for a full-time Stroke Consultant Physician to join an existing team of 10 NHS and academic consultants providing Stroke services to the people of Nottinghamshire and beyond. NUH is the Comprehensive Stroke Centre for the East Midlands and provides Endovascular, Neurosurgical services, 24/7 Thrombolysis and Hyperacute Care.

The service is expanding following the successful business case for expanding Mechanical Thrombectomy 24/7. There is capacity to make more than one appointment for this recruitment round.

You will be joining a dedicated, diverse and dynamic team of professionals providing outstanding stroke care and internationally recognised Stroke research within the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre, a partnership between NUH and the University of Nottingham.

NUH is the fourth largest acute Trust within the UK, with a busy emergency department at Queens Medical Centre, which is a level 1 Trauma Centre. NUH provides services to 2.5 million residents of Nottingham and surrounding communities, and specialist services to a further 3-4 million across the region and nationally.

NUH hosts the Mechanical Thrombectomy Centre for the East Midlands region. The service is currently Monday to Friday however there is a phased programme of works in place towards the service running 24/7 in January 2024.


Main duties of the job

Applicants must have GMC registration and be eligible to be included on the Specialist Register. Sub specialty interests could also be accommodated.

Working for our organisation

The Comprehensive Stroke Centre, at NUH, consists of:

  • 16 bedded hyper acute stroke unit at QMC campus
  • 34 bedded acute rehabilitation stroke unit at QMC campus
  • 18 bedded long-term rehabilitation stroke unit at City Campus and 6 Beds in Connect House (further rehab beds)
  • A daily Fast Track TIA clinic
  • Stroke outpatient clinics
  • 24/7 thrombolysis service supported by telemedicine
  • A regional Mechanical Thrombectomy service
  • Regional Neurosurgical service provision

The Stroke Service currently has six stroke consultants, two academic consultants, one neurologist and one acute medicine consultant, providing a 24 hour 7 day a week service. The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic, passionate team with a specialist interest in stroke care. The Trust is committed to further development of the service to maintain its long standing position in the forefront of stroke care provision. This appointment will play a key part in further developments of the stroke pathway, providing input to hyper acute stroke, acute stroke, intensive rehab and continuing stroke rehabilitation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

A relocation package is available for eligible candidates for up to £6000 tax-free.

The successful applicant will provide consultant cover, as part of the team, for:

  • Hyper Acute Stroke Unit – Monday to Thursday, 08:00 – 18:00 6 weeks per year as HASU consultant and 5 weeks per year as Escalation consultant (Monday to Friday 9am – 1pm)
  • Acute Stroke Ward – Monday to Friday cover, 2 wards rounds per week
  • TIA fast track clinic – approx. 37 per year Monday to Friday
  • Outpatients – approx. 21 clinics per year
  • Weekend cover on site - 08:00 – 18:00 Friday and 08:00 – 17:00 Saturday and Sunday – 6 weekends per year
  • Weekend on call overnight (telemedicine) – 14:00 – 08:00 Saturday and Sunday – 4 per year
  • Week day on call overnight (telemedicine) – 18:00 – 08:00 Monday to Friday - 18 per year
